New Mexico officials say Facebook will build their new data center in Los Lunas.
PNM says Facebook would want to open their data center in the last half of 2017 and the first phase of operations could provide between 30 to 50 full-time jobs. Facebook’s initial investment would cost about $250 million.
The PRC approved PNM’s power plan for the data center. The agreements indicate Facebook would want the new data center to be 100% powered by renewable energy, by a new source. Meaning they would build their own “solar center” of some sort. It’s unclear if that would be a wind or solar farm or a combination of the two technologies.
The social media giant was also considering a location in Utah for the Data Center. The state later pulled out of the deal after city leaders in West Jordan couldn’t agree to the $240 million deal. However, Utah later restarted negotiations despite the decision to back out.
Senator Tom Udall, Senator Martin Heinrich along with Representatives Steve Pearce, Ben Ray Lujan, and Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement about the new data center Wednesday.
“We welcome Facebook to New Mexico and are proud to help secure this new investment in our state’s future. Facebook will bring innovative opportunities for our economy and much needed jobs. As a leader in energy development, New Mexico is an ideal fit for the new facility, which is planned to be powered with 100 percent renewable energy.”
