The first signs of West Nile virus activity this year in Yolo County were reported Friday.
The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announced that a dead bird from Davis and two mosquito samples from Woodland and Winters have tested positive for the disease.
At the same time, officials said, West Nile virus activity continues to spread throughout Sacramento County as more birds and mosquito samples test positive. New areas where virus activity has been detected include Orangevale, Fair Oaks, portions of south Sacramento and Elk Grove, according to a district news release.
The district carried out aerial spraying in the Arden Arcade and Carmichael areas Wednesday and Thursday nights. The targeted area covered approximately 15,000 acres north of the American River.
No further aerial spraying is scheduled, according to the district’s website.
“The summer season is in full swing and for the next couple of months we will continue to see a steady rise in mosquito populations and the level of virus,” Gary Goodman, district manager, said in a written statement.
The increase in mosquitoes and intense virus activity will be magnified with triple-digit temperatures expected next week. “Mosquitoes thrive in the heat, and they can complete their life cycle in as little as four to seven days,” Goodman said.
