[fm]: Cisco and Google partner in effort to boost cloud services

Cisco and Google announced a partnership Wednesday that will allow companies to
develop applications that can run on a firm’s own premises or through Google Cloud.

Some analysts said the partnership helps Google Cloud better compete with Microsoft, which already offers a hybrid cloud service. In 2015, Google had a 5 percent market share when it comes to selling tools for developers to create and maintain apps through the cloud, compared to Microsoft’s nearly 16 percent, according to research firm IDC.

Through the partnership, Google Cloud could gain new corporate clients who use Cisco’s tools, and Cisco also benefits because its customers can more seamlessly use services on-premises and through Google Cloud.

“Our partnership with Google gives our customers the very best cloud has to offer — agility and scale, coupled with enterprise-class security and support,” said Chuck Robbins, Cisco’s chief executive officer, in a news release.

Rob Enderle, principal analyst with advisory services firm Enderle Group, said the partnership with Cisco will give Google more “street cred” and “maturity” with business customers.

“Cisco brings with them that they are truly an enterprise provider,” Enderle said. “They understand what large companies want and need.”

The hybrid cloud service through the partnership will become available next year.
