[fm]: Biden says Trump’s Putin praise puts U.S. in 'difficult position'
Vice President Joe Biden wants Donald Trump to stop complimenting Russian President Vladimir Putin, telling reporters on Friday that some of the GOP nominee's comments have put U.S. leaders in “a real difficult position in other parts of the world.”
Biden's remark, which he made in St. Louis at a campaign stop for Democratic Senate candidate Jason Kander, comes just days after Trump set off a firestorm for praising Putin at a national security forum hosted by NBC.
During the forum, Trump asserted that Putin was a stronger leader than President Barack Obama.
“Certainly, in that system, he’s been a leader, far more than our president has been a leader,” Trump said. “We have a divided country.”
Trump further fueled the controversy by appearing Thursday evening in an interview with Larry King that aired of RT America, a television network owned by the Russian government that often toes the Kremlin's line. (Trump's campaign manager later said the interview was meant as a "favor" to King.)
Biden in July had also warned about Trump's overtures, saying the Manhattan billionaire was “playing directly into the hands” of Putin by suggesting that the U.S. might not honor its commitments to NATO.
“The truth is Donald Trump knows nothing about foreign policy, nor should he based upon his background. But the thing that bothers me, Willie, is I don't see any attempt for him to go out and get people who really know [the subject] on the Republican side,” Biden told host Willie Geist on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
On Friday, he continued to sound the alarm. "Some of the things he says put us in a real difficult position in other parts of the world," Biden said.
