Oscar Pistorius, convicted of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp, on valentines’ night will know how long he will serve time in prison today.
Twitter, which has played a major role of informing the public on developments in this case, at the time of writing was already trending.
Hopefully both #ReevaSteenkamp family and #OscarPistorius family will be able to move on as this matter is put to bed today from 09:30— Sikelela Matandela (@ForeverShakes) July 6, 2016#OscarPistorius - Let's remember the victim https://t.co/iftiNqhSX0#ReevaSteenkamp pic.twitter.com/mnOxIWyKua— Rand Daily Mail (@rdm_za) July 6, 2016
Mr Pistorius was initially convicted of culpable homicide at the trial court by Judge Thokozile Masipa. This was overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) to murder.
The murder conviction in South Africa carries a minimum sentence of 15 years but if there are exceptional circumstances, this can be waived.Having initially served time for culpable homicide means Pistorius might have a reduced minimum sentence of murder.
Once again Judge Masipa will be on the spotlight after she came under heavy attack both from the public and the SCA for her judgement on culpable homicide.
During arguments for aggravation and mitigation, Reeva’s father, Barry, said he wanted Oscar to pay for killing his daughter.
But the drama is far from over as both the defense and the state can appeal the sentence when the judgement has been handed down.
