If you put your blush on after your foundation, you’re not alone. But celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose, who works with stars such as Lupita Nyong’o, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Brie Larson and more, told PeopleStyle for our “Life-Changing Tips” series that there’s another way to do it: Put blush on under your foundation, rather than over it.
“When you layer bright blush under a sheer layer of liquid foundation, it gives you the illusion of your own color coming through from underneath the skin,” he says. “It’s perfect for when you want a little bit of color, but want it to look realistic — say if you were to do a bold lip or a dramatic eyes.”
The secret, he says, is to use a liquid or cream blush in a cushion formula (like Lancome’s cushion blush), rather than a powder. “You can use your finger or you can use a Beauty Blender and you can just blend it. The trick is that when you put it on, you don’t want to blend it too much because you want it too be a little obvious – like a Raggedy Ann at first — then when you layer the liquid foundation on top, that’s when you blend it around. That’s how it’s going to look seamless and you can still see the color popping through.”
Barose uses this technique on all of his clients. “I’ve done this trick on Gugu, Lupita, Tessa Thompson, Brie Larson,” he says, “it really gives that pop of the skin without it looking like you’re wearing blush.”
So what color blush should you layer on? “For this look, we want it too look really natural, so it’s really depending on your skin tone,” he says. “If you’re fair like Brie, I would go with more of a pink. If you’re more of a medium, like Gugu, I would go more with an orange. And if you’re more of a deeper tone like Lupita, I’d go more with a raspberry.”
