[fm]: Don't Tell Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick They Resemble Their 'Trolls' Characters

DreamWorks Animation has begun to unspool early footage of its upcoming film Trolls — at CinemaCon, Cannes, at a recent screening in New York, and this week at Comic-Con. And voice stars Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick haven’t loved some of the reactions they’ve gotten.

Not about the Trolls footage per se — that’s been generally well-received. But rather, they haven’t appreciated hearing how much they resemble the iconic plastic dolls-turned-cartoon characters they voice in the animated musical adventure.

“We got to Germany, and there was this woman who saw some of the footage and she was like, ‘Your character looks like you.’ And I was like, 'Oh yeah, they have cameras on us, and we make the same expressions,’” Timberlake told Yahoo Movies at Comic-Con in reference to some motion-capture techniques used on the film. “And she was like, 'No, it looks like you, when it’s expression-less.'”

When we said that must just mean he’s convincing in the role of the cranky bluish-green troll Branch, Timberlake (who also executive produced the soundtrack and provided the hit single, "Can’t Stop The Feeling”) fired back: “Thank you, but I think she was saying I have a green tone to my skin and large ears. I think that’s what she was trying to say.”

Kendrick, who voices the cheery pink troll Poppy, had a similar experience. “A friend of mine who had seen some of the footage — we were talking the other day, and he was like, 'You did a Poppy face just then. I was like, 'What the hell?’ I don’t even know what to say to that.”

Trolls opens Nov. 4.
