Pebble Core is a unique beast. Part of the Pebble 2 Kickstarter (the fourth-most-funded Kickstarter ever as of Friday morning…two of the other top three spots are also Pebble campaigns), it represents the first non-watch hardware from the independent smartwatch company. As announced on Thursday, it now also represents one of the handful of non-Amazon products to integrate Alexa.
The Pebble Core is a 3G-enabled, ultraportable, voice-driven computer. Pebble has had voice-recognition technology since the introduction of the Pebble Time. When the Core was in the initial design stages, there was even a small special projects team within Pebble dedicated to building “Pebble Concierge,” the team’s foray into deeper voice technology. After extensive beta testing, they found that users were looking for natural language comprehension and speedy responses – things that Amazon Alexa has already conquered. Rather than remake the wheel, the decision was made to integrate Amazon’s tech into their own.
With Alexa on board, the Core will be able to do everything that the Amazon Echo can do, including:
- Play songs, artists, and playlists from Amazon Prime Music, iHeartRadio, and more
- Read you the latest news headlines
- Order pizza
- Shop for gifts and necessities on Amazon
- Get weather and traffic updates.
