Consumers Energy’s first solar power plant is ready to power hundreds of West Michigan homes.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday at the facility’s 17-acre site, located just south of Grand Valley State University’s Allendale campus.
The Solar Gardens plant is comprised of 11,000 solar panels, making it the largest community solar project statewide.
“This particular project is a great example of a public-private partnership which is really is in the DNA of West Michigan and definitely in the DNA of Grand Valley. And when I look at our mission to shape students’ lives, societies, it really is doing just that,” said GVSU President Tom Haas.
The plant generates enough energy to power about 600 homes; customers can buy blocks of energy.
Consumers Energy is building a second solar power site at Western Michigan University, which should be running by late summer 2016. The utility company is also considering a mid-Michigan location.
