Elon Musk's SpaceX announced via Twitter Wednesday plans to send its Dragon spacecraft to Mars as early as 2018—an aggressive timeline that will help demonstrate the technology needed to land large payloads on Mars.

SpaceX was founded in 2002 with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets. The company, which currently flies the Falcon 9 rocket, has been working on the Mars Colonial Transporter, or MTC. The upcoming "Red Dragon" missions will help to inform the design of the MTC.
Musk is expected to announce further details about his Mars vision at the International Astronautical Congress in September.
NASA hopes to send humans to Mars in the 2030s.
