We’re now just a little over a year out from a new Fast and the Furious
movie. Vin Diesel, who plays the lead character Dominic Toretto in the
franchise, confirmed the eighth installment almost immediately after the
seventh hit theaters last April, and now he’s posted the first official
teaser for the new movie on his Instagram account.
It confirms a New York City setting and an April 2017 release date. It also confirms that the movie will be called Fast 8. Though these facts were already known, Diesel recently revealed that the first movie in the franchise, 2001’s The Fast and the Furious,
was originally meant to be set in New York as the concept was inspired
by an article on Illegal street racing in the area. However, it was
eventually filmed in a Los Angeles setting.
Some of the other things we know about Fast 8 is that it will be directed by F. Gary Gray, whose previous titles include last year’s Straight Outta Compton as well as 2009’s Law Abiding Citizen and 2003’s version of The Italian Job.
In addition to starring Diesel, we'll also see familiar faces such as
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Ludacris and
Tyrese Gibson. It's possible we'll also see the return of some previous
faces from the franchise such as Eva Mendes, Lucas Black and Paul
Walker’s brother Cody Walker (he helped to fill in for his late brother
in filming some final scenes for Furious 7).
