The consequences of unintended pregnancy can be disruptive at best and fatal at worst. Reproductive health issues are one of the biggest causes of death and chronic health problems for women of childbearing age worldwide. Even if these are avoided, unintended pregnancy can disrupt education, employment and life chances.
Population Matters is calling for stronger women’s rights and better access to family planning services for people throughout the world so they can choose for themselves how many children to have and when to have them. We oppose early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation and support women’s access to education and employment. We operate at local, national and international levels, conducting research, raising awareness and promoting policy change. We operate PopOffsets, which supports family planning projects around the world. Our research shows that the easiest way of reducing carbon emissions is reducing unintended pregnancies.
We have been around for more than 20 years and have members throughout the world. We partner with other organizations to promote women’s rights and family planning as essential components of a sustainable future.
Our members support us with their donations and through promoting population awareness in a variety of ways — in educational institutions and the media; at events; and by making family, friends, neighbours and government officials more aware of the issues.
